How to choose your clients
As a freelancer, you may think that more business translates to more money. It’s true that gaining more clients is one of the keys to growing your freelance revenue, but that doesn’t mean you should take on any and every project that comes your way. Working with the right clients is essential to your success, and choosing the clients that are a good fit for you helps keep your stress level low.
To determine whether a client is worth accepting, consider how they communicate with you during the pitching process. Pay attention to the tone they use and what type of questions they ask. These are all clues as to how the client will manage the project and work with you.
You can also find out a lot about a client by looking at their website and social media profiles. Look for testimonials, case studies and industry-related articles. These can help you determine if the client will be a good fit for your style of working and if their work aligns with your values.
In addition, you can find out more about a potential client by speaking with someone who works with them or with their past freelancers. For example, if the company has multiple social media accounts and is active in various industry groups, that’s a good sign that they’ll be easy to work with.
It’s also important to find out if the client is likely to have a long term relationship with their freelancer. If they tend to work with a few freelancers and then replace them after a while, that’s a red flag that the company doesn’t value a strong working relationship.
Lastly, you should consider how much time the project will require of you. If you’re working with a new client, it’s important to set clear expectations on what the project will involve so there are no surprises down the line. If a project is going to be too time consuming for you, it’s probably best to turn down the opportunity.
Finally, you should only accept projects with favorable contract terms. This can include a fixed fee, milestone payments or a payment schedule that is convenient for you. Contract terms that are not in your favor should be a red flag, especially if they’re going to impact your bottom line negatively.
When it comes to choosing your clients, you should remember that freelancing is about freedom and choices. When you accept business relationships that become a burden, you’re no longer free to choose how you want to spend your time and money. Taking the time to qualify prospective clients up front can be one of the best investments you make in your career.
